We are elated to present Jewel Ellis as our July 2023 “My Brown Ballerina!” This young woman is a classical ballet sensation; known for her performances at luxury weddings and has been featured on major networks and television shows such as: NBC LX, ABC, FOX 5, Good Morning America, and other networks. Jewel has always known that she loved to dance and that she specifically enjoyed performing just a little bit more. She loved being on stage and interacting with the audience. She had to dig deep and really understand what it is that she wanted to execute with dance -that led her to performing at luxury weddings and events.
Jewel began her dance career at the age of three with Northeast Atlanta Ballet. Today, she is nationally known as the “Flowerina™” or ballerina flower-girl. She is also CEO of “Jewel Ballerina LLC,” an event entertainment company that specializes in classical ballet performances for luxury weddings and events. Jewel has acquired over 36 million views on TikTok alone for showcasing her talent across the country. She performs a unique spin on a timeless tradition. She strives to continue to perform and present the art of classical ballet while educating the next generation of ballet dancers.
As a Brown Ballerina, Jewel shares that the challenges of classical ballet performances for weddings has never been occupied in these spaces. Therefore; she had to construct a pathway in dance, which has been difficult to maneuver. She attributes her success to her artistry and ability to improvise on the spot. Jewel states that a lot of her work is centered around improvisation and on-demand creativity. She has found that it is her strong suit and it has allowed her to explore dance from a business owner and creative director’s perspective.
Jewel disclosed that Misty Copeland is an inspiration to her and has demonstrated that a black ballerina can make it in the ballet world. Misty has shown that not only can she be successful, but that she can define success in her own way.
Jewel hopes to see brown ballerinas increase the caliber of techniques expressed. The stereotype has always been that, brown dancers are not as graceful, light or delicate. It’s time to change that narrative.
